Today in History
Today in History is the story of people, places and events through time. It is a record of what happened, when it happened and why it mattered to those who lived through it.
The site provides a fascinating insight into the world that we live in and how we got here, and it is a great way to get children excited about the past. It allows them to discover the events that shaped our lives and understand the importance of the past in shaping our futures.
This is a collection of historical events that occurred on this date in history, from 3761 BC to the present day. It is a timeline of significant dates and events, including battles, births, deaths and significant achievements.
History Today was founded on January 1951, a month after the end of World War II. The name was inspired by a comment made by the Labour MP Alan Bracken in the Commons smoking room after a long evening debating coal nationalisation with Churchill. The phrase 'history today' was seized upon by the magazine's founding editor, Philip Johnston, as an ideal title for the new publication.
From the start, the magazine has been committed to high quality illustrated articles. It has always seen visuals as far more than mere decoration, and under the editorial team of Jackie Guy (picture editor from 1964 to 1998) and then Sheila Corr, the research has been meticulous and closely matched to both the letter and spirit of the texts.
